SCROLL
THE CONTEXT

The Kennedy family had grown, processed and sold rice in Mer Rouge, Louisiana for generations. Elton Kennedy built the business with partners, and the name, KenChow, was assembled from their surnames.

When he retired, his four daughters came together to start a new chapter. They called us about products and services. We went to the farm instead.

THE CHALLENGE

A name built for the trade, pointed at a shopper.

KenChow was a name built for a B2B wholesale operation, and it worked there. But the sisters were pointing at retail and direct to consumer, a market where the buyer is a person standing in an aisle with four seconds to decide.

We could have pushed the existing assets further. It would have been the easier sale, and they had not asked us to question the name. We told them the truth instead: the brand they had inherited was not the brand that would take them where they were going.

THE INSIGHT
A name assembled from the founders' surnames tells the trade who made it. It tells a shopper nothing.
The equity was never in the name. It was in the family standing behind it, and nobody outside the business had ever been shown them.

THE FAMILY NOBODY OUTSIDE THE BUSINESS HAD BEEN SHOWN
THE STRATEGY

So we put them on the package.

4Sisters ... and a rice farm in Louisiana. Who they are, what they do and where they come from, in one line, read in the time a shopper actually gives you.

Then we made the buyers decide. The sisters were due to present to Walmart. We insisted they show both brands and let the room choose.

4Sisters is a must.

THE ARCHITECTURE

One family name, five varieties, and room for something that is not rice at all.

The structure had to do two jobs. Let a single family name carry the rice range without it fragmenting, and leave room for a sub brand with its own world that never detaches from the farm. We built an endorsed model.

THE CREATIVE EXECUTION

Rustic type, earth tones, and a provenance made explicit.

Women run. US grown. Said out loud on the front of the pack rather than implied on the back. A brand book to hold it, and a family mark that carries on every variety.

THE SITE

Built to do what the package does. Lead with the family, then the food.

Grown for Taste runs as the hero. From Our Farm to Your Table carries the range. A Meet the 4Sisters page does the work a wordmark can only gesture at.

Underneath it sits a recipe and editorial programme, earning search and giving the brand somewhere to be useful between purchases.

THE SECOND INSIGHT
Nobody in the category was speaking to the guilt.
With the brand working we looked inward. The four sisters were also four working mothers, running the balancing act most women run: a child's health, a child's taste, and your own time. Most will not say this out loud. When time loses, they reach for the box of mac and cheese.
THE LINE EXTENSION

So we did not sell mothers a healthier rice. We removed the guilt, and gave the child a reason to ask for it by name.

KidsFavs. Instant cook rice meals, each flavour carrying an original character to collect, with a scannable code taking a child from the aisle to story time.
